چکیده

2014 By means of optical microscopy, Kossel diagrams of chiral smectic phases are observed for the first time. Due to Bragg reflection, these diagrams occur in the focal plane of the microscope lens if the sample is illuminated with convergent monochromatic light. The Kossel diagram for the SmC* phase 2014 observed for the chiral compound CE3 (BDH) 2014 consists of a central ring corresponding to the periodicity p/2 of the |m| = 2 mode of the tensor order parameter 03B5(r) describing the helical structure. The temperature dependence of the pitch p(T) determined by the Kossel method is in agreement with spectroscopic investigations of the Bragg scattering in back reflection. The Kossel diagrams of the unknown chiral smectic structure SmM * consist also of one central ring ; no additional reciprocal lattice vectors are observed in the visible wavelength range for this phase. In addition to the Kossel diagrams, we report on the observation of Airy spirals in the SmC* phase. J. Phys. France 51 (1990) 2087-2099 15 SEPTEMBRE 1990,

Optical activity measurements in the smectic blue phases

Optical activity measurements have been performed on the smectic blue phases (BPSm), which are a new kind of chiral liquid crystal. BPSm exhibit both three-dimensional orientational order, like the classical blue phases, and smectic positional order. Thus, they can be viewed as the three-dimensional counterpart of the twist grain boundary phases. A comparison with the optical activity of the cl...

Generation of frustrated liquid crystal phases by mixing an achiral nematic-smectic-C mesogen with an antiferroelectric chiral smectic liquid crystal.

By mixing the achiral liquid crystal HOAB, exhibiting a nematic (N)-smectic-C (SmC) mesophase sequence, with the chiral antiferroelectric liquid crystal (AFLC) (S,S)-M7BBM7, forming the antiferroelectric SmC(a)(*) phase, at least seven different mesophases have been induced which neither component forms on its own: a twist-grain-boundary (TGB(*)) phase, two or three blue phases, the untilted Sm...

Phase behavior in the reentrant-nematic region of chiral frustrated smectic liquid crystals

A high-resolution ac calorimetric study has been carried out on two homologous polar liquid crystals with aromatic cores containing three phenyl groups and a flexible chiral linking group. The expected smectic polymorphism occurs, and there are several prominent thermal features in the nematic range between smecticAd and smectic-C̃ phases. It is suggested on the basis of characteristic thermal s...

Investigations of nanoscale helical pitch in smectic-C*alpha and smectic-C* phases of a chiral smectic liquid crystal using differential optical reflectivity measurements.

Differential optical reflectivity (DOR) was used to study the temperature dependence of the short helical pitch in freestanding films of a liquid crystal compound. The experimentally measured DOR signal was fitted using Berreman's 4 x 4 matrix method to get the pitch value in the smectic-C*alpha (sMC*alpha) phase. The results show continuous evolution of the pitch between the smectic-C*alpha an...

Chiral random grain boundary phase of achiral hockey-stick liquid crystals.

A disordered chiral conglomerate, the random grain boundary (RGB) phase, has been observed below the smectic A liquid crystal phase of an achiral, hockey-stick molecule. In cells, the RGB phase appears dark between crossed polarizers but decrossing the polarizers reveals large left- and right-handed chiral domains with opposite optical rotation. Freeze-fracture transmission electron microscopy ...
